Tie-Breaker Rule and Examples Revised: 12/02/2008

Weekly standings will be based upon Won/Lost record with tied teams sorted by best defense or PA (points against).

Final standings, those used to determine playoff rankings, will apply the following tie-breaker rules:

TWO TEAM TIE

Head to head competition shall be used as the primary discriminator.  If a tie remains then the Point Differential method described below will be used as the secondary discriminator.

THREE TEAM TIE

Primary Discriminator:  Head to Head competition

a) If one of the 3 teams beat the other two teams then that team shall be ranked highest.

     - Head to head between the remaining two teams is then applied to determine their ranking.

b) If each of the 3 teams beat each other (i.e. - they have identical 1-1 records against each other) then the secondary discriminator is applied.

Secondary Discriminator:  Point Differential ("Points For" minus "Points Against")

The differentials (maximum of 13 points) of each game between only the tied teams are totaled and the teams are ranked accordingly.   For ties between three teams the one with the lowest differential total is eliminated and finishes in the 3rd position.  1st and 2nd positions are then determined by head-to-head competition between the remaining two (2) teams.  For ties between more than three (3) teams tie-breaker the primary and secondary discriminator shall be evaluated in an iterative fashion.

NOTE:  If the tied teams did not play each other over the regular season then the CVNJB Board shall make the final determination of playoff ranking.   The following data may be used:  results versus common opponents, lowest PA, or overall PF-PA.

EXAMPLE 1: TWO TEAM TIE (the easy one)

Team A tied with Team B for 2nd place with identical 5-2 records.

Team A played and defeated Team B over the regular season

Team A gets the #2 seed.  Team B gets the #3 seed.

EXAMPLE 2: THREE TEAM TIE (the easy 3 way)

Team A, Team B, and Team C all tied for 5th place with identical 3-4 records.

a) Apply tie-breaker #1, Head to Head:

Team A beat Team C but lost to Team B

Team B beat Team A and beat  Team C

Team C lost to Team A and lost to Team B

Team B beat both teams in head to head so is the #5 seed.

Team A beat Team C so is the #6 seed.

Team C gets the #7 seed.

EXAMPLE 3: THREE TEAM TIE (the more complicated 3 way)

Team A, Team B, and Team C all tied for 1st place with identical 6-1 records.

a) Apply tie-breaker #1, Head to Head:

Team A beat Team B but lost to Team C

Team B beat Team C but lost to Team A

Team C beat Team A but lost to Team B

No clear winner as they each finished with 1 victory and 1 loss versus each other.

b) Apply tie-breaker #2, PF-PA versus only the tied teams:

Team A beat Team B by 10 points (+10) but lost to Team C by 18 points (-13 max) for a total of -3.

Team B beat Team C by 8 points (+8) but lost to Team A by 10 points (-10) for a total of -2.

Team C beat Team A by 18 points (+13 max) but lost to Team B by 8 points (-8) for a total of +5.

In tabular format (my preferred approach):

TEAM A TEAM B TEAM C
+10 -10
-13   +13
  +8 -8
-3 -2 +5

Team A has the lowest total so gets bumped out and is the #3 seed.

Head to head between the remaining 2 is then applied.

Team B beat Team C so Team B gets the #1 seed (even though Team C has a higher PF-PA)
